Latest Cisco news highlights product reboot for hybrid and multicloud world

Cisco Systems Inc. made a series of announcements at its Cisco Live EU conference today in Barcelona that were designed to help its customers deliver and monitor applications from the edge to cloud.

The networking giant is leveraging its application monitoring software — AppDynamics — along with an Intersight Workload Optimizer tool to optimize the infrastructure where applications run.

“This is about Cisco setting the table,” John Furrier, co-host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, said during the keynote analysis on the opening day of Cisco Live. “To me, the top story so far is that Cisco is not going to yield to the big cloud guys. They are, brick by brick, rebooting their products to be cloud-enabled for hybrid and then ultimately multicloud.”

Furrier, along with co-hosts Dave Vellante and Stu Miniman, discussed Cisco’s latest announcements involving support for edge computing environments and new tools in the collaboration space. (* Disclosure below.)

Security for IoT

Cisco also announced a security architecture for “internet of things” environments. Cisco Cyber Vision will offer software and services for detection of threats to IoT devices in real time.

“Edge is the next big opportunity for Cisco,” Miniman said. “They said you should think of the network as a sensor. This is what’s going to be able to drive your insights and outcomes. It’s not just the plumbing anymore.”

New tools for Cisco’s Webex portfolio of collaboration products were introduced in Barcelona as well. The company unveiled an analytics solution that gives customers insight into how contact centers are used for assistance.

Cisco also plans to deliver a new remote-controlled videoconferencing device with a laptop-connected camera that allows users to host virtual meetings. The latest moves in the collaboration market are partly in response to the rapid growth of Zoom Video Communications, which reached a market capitalization of more than $18 billion late last year.

“Collaboration had been a sleepy market,” Vellante noted. “Zoom changed that, and woke everybody up.”
